The more you know...

October is the spookiest time of year. Between the haunted houses, scary movies, and crisp autumn winds howling through the trees, a few bumps in the night are to be expected. But if those strange noises are coming from your basement every time the thermostat clicks on, you probably don’t have a ghost. You have a struggling furnace.

After sitting idle all summer, firing up your heating system for the first time can uncover a few frightening issues. Before the real winter freeze sets in across Central Indiana, it’s important to listen to what your HVAC system is trying to tell you.

Here is our quick guide to decoding the spooky sounds of a struggling furnace, and when it’s time to call in the professionals.

1. The Sudden "Boom" or "Bang"

What it sounds like: A loud, sudden thump or explosion-like bang shortly after the heat kicks on. What it actually is: This is one of the most alarming sounds a furnace can make, and it usually points to one of two things. The less scary option is your metal ductwork expanding and popping as warm air suddenly rushes through it.

The much scarier (and more dangerous) option is delayed gas ignition. If your furnace burners are dirty, the gas may not ignite immediately. Instead, it builds up in the chamber until it finally catches, creating a miniature gas explosion. If you hear a loud "boom" from the furnace itself, turn the system off and call a technician immediately.

2. The High-Pitched Squeal

What it sounds like: A sharp, metal-on-metal screeching or squealing sound that lasts as long as the furnace is running. What it actually is: Your furnace shouldn't sound like nails on a chalkboard. This shriek almost always indicates a mechanical issue within the blower motor. It could be a loose or frayed blower belt (in older systems) or motor bearings that have dried out and desperately need lubrication. Ignoring this sound is a surefire way to burn out your blower motor entirely, leaving you in the cold.

3. The Persistent Rattle

What it sounds like: A steady clattering, rattling, or shaking sound. What it actually is: Rattling can range from a very minor nuisance to a major safety hazard. On the harmless side, it could simply be a loose access panel or a vibrating screw that needs to be tightened down.

However, a rattling sound can also be the warning sign of a cracked heat exchanger. This is a serious issue that can allow dangerous carbon monoxide to leak into your home’s air supply. Because the stakes are so high, a rattling furnace should always be inspected by a qualified technician to ensure your home is safe.

4. The Ghostly Howl

What it sounds like: A high-pitched whistling or howling sound coming from the furnace or the vents. What it actually is: This ghostly noise is your furnace suffocating! Whistling is almost always caused by restricted airflow. The most common culprit is a severely clogged, dirty air filter. When the filter is completely blocked by dust and debris, the blower motor has to pull air through any tiny crack it can find, creating a whistling effect. Swap out your air filter first. If the howling continues, you may have blockages in your ductwork.
