Tankless Water Heaters
There are many reasons to consider a tankless water heater. It provides a continuous supply of hot water. Its compact size saves space. It is eco-friendly, long lasting, reliable, safe, and clean. There are substantial energy savings over the life of the system, as much as 20% off your water heating bill. A tankless water heater is a cost efficient and ecological way to comfort your entire home.
A tankless water heater works by directly heating water on demand as opposed to a conventional water heater, which collects and stores your water and uses a continual heating source to keep the water hot. Since water is constantly heated in the tank, energy can be wasted even when a hot water tap isn't running. This is called standby heat loss. Only tankless water heaters avoid standby heat losses. According to the Energy.gov website, tankless water heaters can be 24%–34% more energy efficient than conventional storage tank water heaters.
Gas Water Heaters
Gas water heaters typically cost slightly more to purchase, but use less energy and cost about half as much to operate as electric models. Designed for rapid recovery, natural gas heats water faster than electric, so you're less likely to run out of hot water. Plus your water heater recovers about four to five times faster than an electric mode, bringing you hot water faster. When you consider the fact that water heating can account for 14% to 25% of the energy consumed in your home, using natural gas for your water heating needs is a good choice. They heat water twice as fast when compared with an electric water heater and emit only about half the carbon emissions.
Electric Water Heaters
If you’re going to buy an electric water heater, we recommend you look for one with an Energy Factor equal to .93 or greater. This represents a 5 to 10 percent savings compared to a standard efficiency electric water heater. This higher efficiency is achieved by better tank insulation to reduce standby losses, and a device to block cooler water from adjacent water pipes from sinking into the tank where it needs to be reheated. The savings pay for the slightly higher costs of these heaters within a year or two.
While hard water isn't a heath hazard for you, it can cause real damage to your faucets, tubs, sinks, and toilets. That's because hard water contains higher levels of dissolved minerals, specifically calcium and magnesium. These minerals can build up and leave pesky residue, make your water feel harsh and drying, and can even dull the effects of things like shampoo and soap. To combat hard water, consider investing in a water softener. Water softeners change the chemical balance of the water, and drastically reduce the minerals in the water that flows out of your faucets and shower heads.
