Celebrating 70 Years

Joe Hamros started Commercial Service of Bloomington, Inc. in 1946 as a small 2-man heating repair company. Through the 1950’s and 60’s the company continued as a small heating and cooling service company gaining a solid reputation for great service, excellent craftsmanship and innovative solutions. Commercial Service actually installed some of the first air conditioning systems in Bloomington, Indiana in the late 1950s.

In 1973 Jules Sonneborn, a seasoned manufacturing plant manager from New Bedford, MA, purchased Commercial Service a company that specialized in furnace and air conditioning repair in Bloomington Indiana. Jules & his wife June were looking to move back to June’s hometown, Unionville, IN. Jules immediately made some big changes and began aggressively recruiting new customers and increasing the company’s client base. Within a couple years the business’s growth and success grabbed the attention of Jules and June’s son, Mike Sonneborn.

Mike Sonneborn, a graduate of the University of Pittsburg with a degree in Economics, moved to Bloomington, Indiana with his wife Sherry in 1975. Mike, like his father, seized the opportunity to expand the organizations size and reputation for fast reliable furnace and air conditioning repair and sales. Mike developed relationships with organizations like General Electric, Cook Inc., Monroe County YMCA, Rogers Group and the City of Bloomington. These relationships developed through the 1980’s and 1990’s and were the driving force for the company’s growth. By the late 1990’s Commercial Service had grown from the original 2-man service company to an organization that employed over 30 full time employees and had major commercial and residential Heating and Cooling projects throughout Bloomington and the state of Indiana. By the early part of the new millennium Mike looked to develop a leadership team that would see Commercial Service beyond his own tenure and through the next generation.

In March 2003 Scott Rink joined Commercial Service as VP of Operations. Previously a production manager with Cook, Inc. & DePauw University graduate, Rink brought a wealth of organizational & interpersonal management experience to the table. Later the following year, Rink hired Greg Humphrey CPA to manage the organizations finances.

In 2006, with the hiring of Joe Garman, Rink diversified the company’s traditionally commercial heritage and established a highly specialized Residential Division. Later the following year, Charlie Laughlin joined Garman and the two developed what is now one of the largest Residential Trane Dealers in the state of Indiana.

In 2012 Commercial Service partnered with R&S Plumbing to offer residential and commercial plumbing. Adam Sater, a 20 year veteran with Commercial Service and Commercial Division manager was charged with managing that relationship.

In October 2015, after 40 years, Mike Sonneborn retired from Commercial Service. Upon his recommendation and unanimous support from the board Scott Rink was named President and CEO. Rink immediately named Adam Sater VP of Commercial Operations, Charlie Laughlin VP of Residential Operations & Greg Humphrey as CFO.
